Why did a manga publisher create an AI interpretation app?
Coamix Inc. is a unique manga publishing company in Japan, founded by a team of editors and creators, including former Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief Nobuhiko Horie, Fist of the North Star artist Tetsuo Hara, and City Hunter artist Tsukasa Hojo. Our mission goes beyond simply bringing Japanese manga to the world—we collaborate directly with international manga creators to co-develop new works. Our global manga competition, the SILENT MANGA AUDITION®, is one example of our efforts to support international creative exchange and to spread manga culture worldwide.
Through this journey, one challenge became clear:
how to overcome language and cultural barriers to enable true creative
collaboration.
In manga production, artists and editors work closely together—refining storylines, shaping characters, adjusting panel layouts, and crafting natural dialogue. Communicating such nuance across cultures and languages is far from easy. And yet, interpreters with the necessary skills are not always available.
To solve this, we asked ourselves a fundamental question:
What does it really mean to "understand each other"?
The result is MaiTALK, an AI interpretation app designed to bridge that gap.
